Answer Key Experiment and Discover
1. Why do science fair projects usually work out better when you use the scientific method?
Answer: When you use the scientific method, you can share with others what you learned from research, not just demonstrate a science principle that you read about in your science book.
2. If you use the scientific method, and you prove that your hypothesis is wrong, have you failed?
Answer: Not really. Any time you can prove a hypothesis, whether it is right or wrong, you have still succeeded because you know something you didn't before.
3. What would happen if you wanted to know something using the scientific method, but you left out the step of experimentation?
Answer: Without experimentation, you would not have any evidence to prove or disprove your hypothesis. You could not find a valid answer to your question.
4. Choose any of the four gravity experiments Galileo performed, and use the steps of the scientific method to summarize the experiment.
Answer: 1. Ask a question – Do objects fall at the same rate? 2. Study the question – it was commonly believed that objects fall at different rates 3. Form a hypothesis – objects fall at different rates based on their weight 4. Experiment – drop two items of different weight at the same time to measure which one hits the ground first 5. Evaluate the results – the two objects landed at the same time. The hypothesis is invalid.
5. Nick and Paige tested animal response to scent using oregano, fruit extract, and fox pee. What scents would you have tried, and how do you think the wolves and mountain lions would have responded?
Answer: Students can make up their own answers. The objective is for them to form a hypothesis.
6. Which of these experiments could you apply the scientific method to? Give one example.
Answer: Students can make up their own answers. This study question will help them to choose an experiment for their final project.
